....our
MISSION
Gallery X has functioned as a contemporary art space on
129th Street in New York's Harlem until May 2002, and now relocated in
Istanbul, Turkey. It's founder, Gulsun Erbil, a Turkish-born artist, has
created a space which has become a spawning ground for emerging artists
with exceptional talent and has reached out to the community to make art
accessible to the people.
The solo and group shows at Gallery X feature two- and three-dimensional
works, including installations and performance art. Poetry readings, audio,
video and performance art screenings, and panel discussions on art enrich
the gallery's scope.
On August 9, 1998, Gallery X reached out beyond its walls. More than 20
artists participated in 'X-treme X-teriors 98',
a one-day, outdoor show in Marcus Garvey Park between 120th and 124th
Streets off 5th Avenue. Adults and children from the community got a chance
to see art, make art and become part of a day of celebrating creativity.
On May 23, 1999, Gallery X presented the second 'X-treme
X-teriors 99', at Marcus Garvey Park. This time, more than 60 local
and international artists came together to show their work which included
two- and three-dimensional works, site-specific installations, and performance
art. Tis one-day events continued until 2002. Now the gallery hosts many
more interesting events in Istanbul.
Gallery X is dedicated to world peace and strongly believes that, through
art, we will promote a greater understanding and awareness among the people
of the world.
